The Truth Behind the 40K Rumors

It's funny how people just discount everything at once. Remember, in every lie there is a kernel of truth.

Let's compare what was on BOLS and what was already written and what is on Faeit 212's blog (http://natfka.blogspot.com/2011/10/codex-release-schedule-and-sixth.html):

1. The Eldar dex will be out right before the release of 6th edition. Phil Kelly is the writer, which is why he wasn't able to write up the Cron codex.

This is saying right before 6th is dropped, Faeit 212 is saying after. Timing is irrelavent as release dates with GW aren't usually hard targets until 1 - 2 months out. This is probably why they keep things such a secret - think about how many release dates they missed and we never knew about. The important thing to note here is Eldar will be releases in 2012.

2. 6th Ed will be released in June or July of next year (2012) if everything goes to plan; its currently in playtesting right now.

Duh. This is like saying that water is wet. We all know this now.

3. The starter set might be the Fall of Damnos, but he said he wasn't completely sure it would be set there. It will include Space Marines, of course.

Ummmm, Ultramarines versus Necrons in a boxed set? I'd discount this in a second, however, if my memory is right, Orks were the last major release before 5th and they were included in the 5th edition box set. You also have to remember the age-old practice of releasing top-secret information: misinformation.

When a document is classified as top-secret with a limited ditribution, a bunch of different copies are made. Each copy will have different mistakes and errors in them with either grammar or punctuation. This is done so if the document is ever released and it can be traced back to who released it based on where the grammar or punctuation error is. If you ever see a top-secret document that does not contain some grammar issue, then you know it's a fake.

The Fall of Damnos box set may be the same thing. Different groups would be told different battles for the box set so you can tell who is releasing the information. Or, maybe, this was was just an idea thrown out there along with a dozen others that were shot down.

Or it just might be true.

4. CSM will get one of the newest dexes in 6th, right after the Marine dex.

Yeah, we kinda figured this as it has been talked about before. The right after the Marine dex part may be an outright lie or they might pull one out of their pocket with a White Dwarf release. I can see them doing this with Black Templar.

5. Tau and BT will get a release soon after CSM; other races updated in 5th will not be updated in 6th as their rules (at least from Guard onwards) are allready suited for 6th. Ward will probably do the BT and might do Tau as well. DA will probably not be updated anytime soon, because its not a popular army and GW does not want to waste money updating one or more armies that almost no one plays with a separate dex.

Again, it's all about timing. We'ver heard that Tau will be getting a new dex. BT is being discussed a lot in everyone's rumors and their date is all over the place (that's why I'm guessing they will be a White Dwarf codex). 5th codexes not being rewritten makes sense - we normally see that. The rest of the rambling is not written with any form of confidence. will probably and will probably not sounds like the rumors were heard from their mother's brother's room-mate's uncle's friend's co-worker. And again, it may just be ideas thrown around or general statements said at the beginning of planning sessions.

I don't know if GW is purposely releasing incorrect information. Another possible explaination is that what you are reading in these rumors are people's recollections of design meetings told from second hand sources as the edition is being designed. Dates and ideas change over time, so some of what you read do not pan out and most of the dates are wrong. That's why GW doesn't officially release design information until they are done designing it. People base their opinions upon what they hear and if they release plans that don't pan out then they look foolish.

Or, maybe GW is purposely releasing incorrect information. But in order to beleive this then you need to beleive that GW is being run by extremely intellegent business and marketing leaders who can think three, four, and even five steps ahead of the rest of us. And, based on everything I've read on the interwebz, this isn't the case.

Or is that a lie, too?

  1. You left out a very important option which, in many cases, is actually much closer to the truth: the blogs and leakers toss in the misinformation to protect their own sources/identities.
